Name: Nova Reid
Blog: Nu Bride
How did you get into bridal blogging? By accident! I got in engaged on the 4th of November 2011 and got completely swept away by the romance of the wedding industry. However, it didn’t take me long to discover there was very little ‘inclusive” visual representation of women (and men) of color. As a bride who also happened to be black, I felt completely ignored by the U.K. wedding industry and I wanted to do something about it. Nu Bride was born two months later and has grown from an informal outlet to document my wedding planning, to a well-respected and multi-award winning wedding blog that showcases diversity and encourages vendors and media to be more inclusive with the way they market bridal beauty.
What do you love most about weddings? The pure unadulterated joy that comes from two people being lucky enough to find each other out of all the billions of people in the world and dedicating their lives together, in their own unique way, with friends and family. Delicious!
What’s the most underrated aspect of any ceremony? Ceremonies where couples rush through their vows, not truly processing the power of the words and commitment they are making to each other.
Your secret to staying calm under pressure? Gathering perspective, being mindful, dedicating time to find balance and not forgetting to breath!
Most unique wedding you’ve ever featured? Can I pick two?
1. I was performing at my very first humanist ceremony in 2012 and it reduced me to tears and I didn’t even know the couple! It stood out to me because the ceremony was 100% tailored around the couple, the celebrant knew them and the love in that room from friends and family was palpable.
2. My brother's wedding in the gorgeous mountains in Slovakia was pretty epic. I also had the pleasure of conducting their wedding blessing. Recounting the stories of how they met and performing a ring warming ceremony. There were tears, laughter and joy in equal measure. The ceremony was tailored around them and their love and it was a joy to witness and conduct.
Your number one piece of advice for any blushing bride? Don’t feel pressured to conform to be anything but yourself on your wedding day. Be confident in being who you are. That’s who your beloved adores and has chosen you to spend the rest of their life with. How awesome is that!
