How did you get into bridal blogging? When I was planning my own wedding in early 2013 I excitedly explored books, blogs and magazines to piece together ideas and inspiration to create my perfect W-day, but to my huge disappointment I found that there wasn’t any one place that brought together what I was looking for—creative and downright super cool ideas for Jewish brides and grooms. I decided to do something about it and started Smashing The Glass, which instantly became the U.K.’s only Jewish wedding blog, and the only blog worldwide focusing on creative and original Jewish (and Jew-ish) weddings—and it still is!
What do you love most about weddings? The emotions, the love story behind every wedding, the coming together of families and loved ones, and most of all, the creative ideas that reflect the couples personalities.
What’s the most underrated aspect of any ceremony? Nothing about a Jewish wedding ceremony is underrated. It’s packed full of goose bump-inducing emotion and wonderful traditions, such as of course the smashing of the glass! It is the first part of a wedding submission that I look at.
Your secret to staying calm under pressure? Perspective! Prior to being a full-time wedding blogger, I was a digital and branding designer, and clients used to often say, ‘It’s urgent, I need this completed immediately.’ I refused to be put under unnecessary stress, and I always used to remind myself that in the working world, the only ‘urgent’ is in the operating theater. Everything else can be carried out in a calm and timely manner. I still remind myself of this when running my blogging business, and fortunately, my clients are very much on my wavelength!
Most unique wedding you’ve ever featured? I think it has to be Danny and Aaron’s extraordinary Jewish wedding held at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
I pride myself on featuring the most unusual and creative Jewish weddings in the world to inspire readers to truly have the wedding they want, and these two absolutely smashed it! To begin with, they rode down the aisle to their chuppah atop a horse dressed as a unicorn (or Jew-nicorn, as they dubbed it!) to the tune of Madonna’s Like a Virgin. What’s more, Joss Stone (yes, the Joss Stone) undertook the role of cantor, singing Circle of Life as Danny and Aaron circled each other under the chuppah, and a 16 person gospel choir was on hand for a few of the ceremony songs too!
When I asked Danny and Aaron what advice they’d give to brides and grooms currently planning their Jewish wedding, they told me, “be unique to your personalities. You can create new Jewish traditions by adding a personal flare to more traditional Jewish rituals, making your wedding unique to you as individuals and as a couple,” and I think that sums up exactly what I am trying to do with Smashing The Glass.
Your number one piece of advice for any blushing bride? Don’t follow the crowd. Be true to yourself and have the confidence to do things your way, whether that means incorporating something non-traditional into your ceremony, picking a weird theme or wearing a gown so impractical you can barely move. Go for it, this is your day!
